North Idaho College Retains Accreditation and Returns to Good Standing After Three-Year Crisis

North Idaho College retained its accreditation and returned to good standing with the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities in February 2026, ending a three-year governance crisis that had threatened the Coeur d’Alene community college’s existence.

The NWCCU’s decision, announced at a special board meeting, removed both the show cause sanction and a subsequent probation sanction. NIC’s accreditation was formally reaffirmed.

‘The college and our community have endured extraordinarily challenging times,’ said Trustee Tarie Zimmerman. ‘It is important to say clearly and without hesitation that what happened at North Idaho College should never have happened.’

Show cause sanctions are almost never levied against public institutions. When they are, it is typically because of financial or academic problems. NIC’s crisis was entirely about board governance. The college’s academics and finances remained strong throughout.

Interim Provost Lloyd Duman said the campus community and wider community came together to save the institution. ‘We stood up and said, we refuse to let this happen to our gem. And it did not.’
