Idaho Chosen Among Five States to Explore DOE Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus

The U.S. Department of Energy has selected Idaho as one of five states that could host a new Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus, a major federal initiative aimed at modernizing the country’s nuclear fuel cycle and generating thousands of jobs.

The announcement came Tuesday, with memorandums of understanding signed between the DOE and each of the five selected states. Utah, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Louisiana were also chosen alongside Idaho.

The proposed campuses would support a wide range of nuclear fuel activities, including fuel fabrication, enrichment, reprocessing of used nuclear fuel, and its final disposition. The initiative is designed to expand domestic manufacturing capacity in the nuclear sector and draw private financial investment into the industry.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright called the campuses transformative for the American economy. “These campuses will be massive generators of economic growth, create thousands of high-paying jobs and be crucial to unleashing America’s nuclear renaissance,” Wright said.

Idaho’s selection comes as no surprise given the state’s deep roots in nuclear development. Idaho National Laboratory, located in eastern Idaho, has anchored the state’s nuclear research and innovation work for more than 70 years. That history gives Idaho a strong competitive position as the DOE moves forward with evaluating potential campus locations.

Governor Brad Little welcomed the news, describing the selection as a point of pride for the state. “Idaho is honored to have been selected as one of five initial contenders to further explore the development of Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses,” Little said. Lieutenant Governor Scott Bedke also voiced strong support, saying he believed Idaho would make an exceptional host.

The initiative aligns with broader national efforts to rebuild domestic nuclear capacity. The Trump administration has made energy dominance a central priority, and nuclear power has emerged as a key piece of that agenda, particularly as demand for reliable baseload electricity continues to climb. Power-hungry data centers across the Northwest have been pushing utilities to expand generation capacity, adding urgency to the push for new nuclear and related fuel infrastructure.

Idaho’s nuclear community has been building momentum on multiple fronts. The state is already home to the only nuclear-focused tech hub in the nation, after an Idaho-Wyoming partnership secured a $31 million federal award to advance nuclear innovation in the region. A Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus would further cement Idaho’s standing as the country’s leading state for nuclear energy development.

For North Idaho and the broader state economy, the potential campus represents significant long-term upside. Nuclear-related manufacturing and fuel cycle operations tend to carry high-paying technical and engineering jobs that provide stable, long-term employment, the kind of private-sector growth that does not depend on ongoing government subsidy once infrastructure is in place.

No specific timeline for a final site decision has been announced. The memorandums of understanding signal the start of a deeper evaluation process between the DOE and each candidate state. Idaho will need to continue making its case, but with Idaho National Laboratory as an anchor institution and decades of demonstrated nuclear expertise, the state enters that competition from a position of genuine strength.
