The Silver Valley communities of Kellogg, Wallace, and surrounding Shoshone County saw a wave of new resident interest through 2021, drawn by housing prices significantly below those in Kootenai and Bonner counties.

Kellogg, once defined primarily by its mining heritage, has seen revitalization centered on Silver Mountain Resort and a growing outdoor recreation economy. Wallace, with its preserved downtown historic district, has attracted both retirees and remote workers seeking small-town character at affordable prices.

Shoshone County’s median home prices remain a fraction of those in Coeur d’Alene or Sandpoint, making the Silver Valley one of the few remaining affordable options in the North Idaho region.

The county’s infrastructure presents both challenges and opportunities. Road maintenance, broadband access, and healthcare availability remain persistent concerns for residents in the more remote areas.
