Kootenai County Population Surges as West Coast Migration Reshapes North Idaho

Kootenai County’s population continued to climb through 2021, driven by sustained migration from Washington, Oregon, and California. Post Falls, Hayden, and the surrounding areas saw particularly strong growth as families and retirees sought lower costs, less regulation, and a more conservative community.

The migration brought economic benefits including new business formation, increased tax revenue, and a construction boom. It also brought challenges. Rising property values pushed tax assessments sharply higher, and housing affordability became a growing concern for longtime residents on fixed incomes.

Post Falls emerged as one of the fastest-growing cities in the state, with residential and commercial development expanding along the Prairie Avenue and Seltice Way corridors.

The demographic shift reinforced North Idaho’s already strong Republican majority. Many newcomers are conservatives who left progressive-leaning states, bringing both alignment with local values and rising expectations for infrastructure and services.
