The Idaho Secretary of State’s Office has fixed a technical problem with its voter registration search tool after residents reported they could not locate their records online last week.
The glitch, first reported on August 10, prevented some people from finding their voter registration information when using VoteIdaho.Gov on mobile devices. The problem occurred when users entered names with extra spaces or omitted middle names from their original registration. The system’s search function could not match those variations to existing records.
A member of a political organization focused on Idaho women identified the issue and shared it publicly on social media, prompting the Secretary of State’s Office to investigate and address the problem.
“We have updated the tool to account for these issues,” told the Idaho Capital Sun Joe Parris, a spokesperson for the Idaho Secretary of State’s Office. “The issues did not affect anyone’s voter registration.”
The office has made two changes to resolve the problem. It added extra search fields that allow voters to verify their status by entering their driver’s license number or the last four digits of their Social Security number. The vendor also implemented a security update that adds another protective layer when people access the voter lookup tool.
The technical fix comes as Idaho prepares for its November general election. The online voter registration deadline is October 23, which falls 11 days before Election Day. Voters who miss the online deadline can still register in person at their polling location on Election Day or during early voting, provided they bring valid photo identification and proof of residence.
Voters who have moved, changed their name, or have not voted in the past four years must update their registration before casting a ballot. Those wishing to change their party affiliation must submit a signed form to their county clerk.
The state maintains its voter rolls by removing inactive voters every two years. In 2025, more than 144,000 individuals were removed from Idaho’s voter rolls as part of this routine maintenance process.
The Trump Justice Department has warned Idaho election officials of potential criminal liability over noncitizen voting issues, and the Secretary of State’s campaign mailers have drawn a formal complaint and an attorney general investigation.
